Abstract: starting a scientific career as a graduate or PhD student faces always difficulties to write the first publication. The transition from a classroom-student to scientist needs fundamental changes in working style and writing style. This lecture, based on author’s experience in guiding Chinese young scientists and PhD student, tries to help starting graduates make breakthroughs in publishing her/his first scientific paper in high-ranking peer-reviewed journals. The content covers how to design a study, how to manage writing, how to select journals, among other basic skills to overcome difficulties/obstacles in the early stage of a scientific career.

朱阳，博士，研究员。1978年考入华东化工学院（现华东理工大学）有机化工系抗生素制造工学专业（部分成为现生物工程学院）。1982年生化工程专业毕业留校先后任教（职）化学系，生化工程系，生化工程研究所，食品科学与工程专业。1987年受教育部派遣到德国明斯特大学微生物所访学，1993年起先后在荷兰国家应用科学研究院（TNO），荷兰瓦赫宁根大学从事科学研究和指导研究生。1997年获得瓦赫宁根大学博士学位。在国际本专业领域期刊发表高水平文章几十篇，主要研究领域包括食品发酵、农副产品的综合开发与利用以及食品保鲜新技术、食用真菌保健生物活性成分的开发与研究等，担任诸多国际学术刊物评审，国家自然科学基金委食品科学学科重点项目、面上项目海外特邀函评专家和会议评审专家、海外评审专家以及欧盟国际项目评审专家，担任《中国生物工程学报》、《微生物学报》等编委。
