After awarded Ph. D. in Chemical Engineering in July 1993, Professor Wen-Song Tan is always engaged in research and education in Chemical Engineering and Bioengineering at ECUST. His research area is in Bioprocess and Bioreactor Engineering, with emphasis on animal cell culture technology, stem cell bioengineering, and tissue engineering. A central theme of his research is applying engineering analysis to bioprocesses and bioreactors, biochemical and cellular systems, and integrating engineering and physiological insights into metabolic manipulation and generic regulation of cellular systems. During the past 20 years, he supervised and accomplished more than 20 projects from the State Government, Ministry of Education, and Shanghai Municipal Government. Based on these funds, considerable progress has been achieved in the research and developments of bioprocesses and bioreactors for animal cell cultures, human stem cell expansion and differentiation, and tissue engineering.
In recent years many accomplishments in the research work have been achieved. Those include (1) bioreactor design, scale-up, and intensifying operation, (2) bioprocess development and optimization for fed-batch and perfusion cultures, (3) serum-and protein-free medium development and application, (4) product quality control technology based on bioprocess design, (5) bioprocess development and optimization for viral vaccine production, (6) manufacturing applications of the mammalian cell culture bioprocesses for producing biologicals, (7) biotechnology and bioreactor systems for hematopoietic stem cell expansion, and (8) bioprocess and bioreactor systems for microtissue fabrication and macrotissue assembling. Most of these achievements are being industrialized in pilot and manufacturing scales in some Chinese leading pharmaceutical enterprises. So far, 22 invention patents have been authorized, and more than 250 papers have been published in domestic and foreign publications.
