Title of the talk: Integrated Devices and Intelligent Diagnostics: when chemistry meets biomedical engineering

Abstract:

There has been a fast-growing market and academic interest in developing novel diagnosing devices driven by the increasing demand for continuous monitoring of human health. By integrating with nanotechnology and biotechnology, biosensors as the analytical devices for the detection of an analyte, that combines a biological component with a physicochemical detector, have demonstrated huge potential for molecular diagnostics. In this talk, Liu will summarize her recent research highlights on development of advanced sensing technologies which can be integrated in microfluidic paper based analytical devices, sweat wearable devices and implantable in vivo devices. She will use cytokines, signally molecules between cells as an example to demonstrate how to use these devices to realise point-of-care diagnostics and in vivo real-time monitoring. Her recent research on developing the intelligent nanoparticles for cytokine biosensing and bioimaging towards precision medicine will be discussed.

Biography:

A/Prof Guozhen Liu, an Associate Professor and ARC Future Fellow at Graduate School of Biomedical Engineering, UNSW, is leading a research team working on Integrated Devices and Intelligent Diagnostics ID2. After finishing her PhD in Chemistry in 2006 at UNSW, Liu conducted her postdoctoral research at CSIRO and UNSW, respectively before she was appointed as an Associate Professor at Central China Normal University in 2009. In 2015 Liu moved back to Sydney and worked at Macquarie University before she was awarded the prestigious ARC Future Fellowship in 2016.

Liu is recognised for her interdisciplinary and translational research with close end-user engagement in the area of biosensors, point-of-care diagnostics, intelligent nanoparticles, and medical devices. She worked in AgaMatrix Inc. for 4 years as a R&D Manager, China, and then continues her industry engagement through a strong record of partnering with biomedical firms such as AstraZeneca, BioLegend, AgaMatrix Inc, and Regeneus Ltd. Liu has published 11 patents, 1 book chapter and 86 journal papers. She has attracted over $5M research funding from both Australian government and industry since 2016. Among her many prestigious awards, she received the Rising Star Award by Australian Association of Chinese Biomedical Scientists in 2018, Academic Excellence Award for transdisciplinary research publications (2017), and Australian Georgina Sweet Award for women in quantitative biomedical science (2016).
