On Dec. 6th, Prof. Pinghua Liu and Weichen Shi were invited by Professor LiXin Zhang to visit the SKLBE and gave a report, respectively.
Prof. Pinghua Liu is working in Department of Chemistry at Boston University. In his talk entitled “Natural products: identification, characterization and production through synthetic biology”, several key problems involved in the development of natural products were discussed, including the affinity-based purification to selectively isolate low natural abundance products, mechanistical characterization of novel transformations and bioinformatics based genome mining to identify new natural products, and the development of fermentation based production for commercially useful natural products.
Weichen Shi is the chairman of the China Biotech Fermentation Industry Association. In his talk “Current Status and Future Development Trend of Biotech fermentation Industry”, the operations, developmental characteristics and major problems in biotech fermentation industry were summarized. The mission and the policies of industry in the future were also recommended.
